A Linux-Powered Cisco Server with VMware?

Cisco in the server hardware business? With VMware? Using Linux? Has the world gone topsy-turvy while I wasn't looking? If you think about it, Cisco's forte--routers--are lightweight computers that do one specific job--routing packets from one network to another. So, their foray into the dark realm of higher-end server systems isn't such a big stretch for them.

Update on openSUSE Infrastructure Services (download.opensuse.org)

We've restored user services to download.opensuse.org and are working to restore all services and add redundancy to the system.
The repository inconsistencies last night were caused by a missing configuration on the system, which caused it to redirect requests on metadata to mirrors, which are often outdated. That is now fixed.

Firefox for MIPS N32 ABI

Finally, I could announce that it is working (tm).
I just submitted the patches (together with O32 ABI patch) to upstream.

Peter Poeml has reported that the storage array is down for download.opensuse.org. We don't have a definite time for it to be up again, but it could be more than one day. We're working on the problem and will be getting a backup in place shortly.

Israeli software appliance project TurnKey Linux announced a dozen new open-source server appliances based on Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS (Long-Term-Support). The releases include servers for LAMP, Ruby on Rails, Joomla, MediaWiki, Drupal, LAPP, Django, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, says the group.

A relatively common task when working with forms is filling select boxes or checkbox and radiobutton lists from a database.
It's not very tricky to query a database, and fill a Zend_Form element's possible values from the resultset, but it can be quite boring and extraneous code

First Beta of Web Beans available!

I'm pleased to announce the release of Web Beans 1.0.0.BETA1. This release implements around 90% of the JSR-299, Java Contexts and Dependency Injection specification. The only major feature missing from this release is support for annotating your beans using XML.

Ubuntu 9.10 sees the cloud above the trees

Next month Ubuntu 9.04, Jaunty Jackelope, hits an FTP or torrent site near you. With its feature set pretty much frozen the masterminds at Canonical are looking to the future with Ubuntu 9.10 - Karmic Koala, I kid you not - being touted as cloud-centric.
