The GNU/Linux Desktop: Nine Myths

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 17, 2009

Nobody questions whether Mac OS X is ready for the desktop. Never mind that switching to it involves learning different assumptions and tools and a new desktop. It has a reputation for being user-friendly, and is backed by a proprietary company, just like Windows.

Renumbering Firebug Releases?

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 17, 2009

While I still don't get why Firefox is renumbering its next release to 3.5, the discussion did make me think about the Firebug version numbering. Our current user release is 1.3.3 which targets Firefox 3.0.4+. Our next release is 1.4 and we will be targeting Firefox 3.5. These Firebug major release numbers have very little information content. Firebug 1.n is just the n-th release since 1.0.

Why I find MySQL to be so bad

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 17, 2009

MySQL is the most used Open Source database engine. I have personally used it for almost 10 years. I worked with versions 3.x, 4.x and 5.x of MySQL, but I also used other database engines, some of them handling the same "data-set size" as MySQL, while others have been smaller databases (mostly Desktop based databases such as SQLite, MS-Access and Paradox).

PCLinuxOS 2009.1 released

Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday March 12, 2009

One month after the PCLinuxOS beta was released, the PCLinuxOS developers have released version 2009.1. The final release includes the 2.6.26.8 kernel, KDE 3.5.10, Java JRE, Compiz-Fusion 3D, OpenOffice 3.0, Firefox 3.0.7 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.14. The developers decided to use KDE 3.5.10 as their default desktop because the latest version, 4.2, did not provide the functionality that they desired. KDE 4.2, however, is an optional install in the distribution's repositories.

SUSE in LPAR on as400 Featuring openSIS

Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday March 12, 2009

openSIS is proud to announce that we are beginning construction of a Linux server on an IBM iSeries computer using a SUSE LPAR. This is a joint venture proof of concept with one of IBM's premier hardware resellers, Mainline Information Systems. The goal of this effort is to demonstrate that openSIS and many of the other packages offered in the openSUSE-Education project will be viable solutions that run natively on the IBM iSeries.

Android leads Linux mobile sales higher

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 11, 2009

Google's Android operating system gave Linux-on-mobile sales a healthy boost in the fourth quarter of 2008. In its latest report on the state of smartphones, IT analysts Gartner said that Linux-based mobile sales increased from 2.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2007 to 3.2 million units at the end of 2008. This was despite a general slowdown in growth for the entire smartphone sector over the same period.
