Open Source Project Gives Java Devs a `Lift`
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday March 09, 2009
Some might question whether there's a need for another Web application framework following the recent consolidation of the upstart Merb project with the Rails 3 effort, but the creators of the open-source Lift Framework project aren't letting that stand in their way. They have released the first version under the Apache 2.0 software license as it celebrates its second anniversary this week.

I have updated my MySQL 5.0 branch in launchpad to use more from Google Perftools including CPU profiling and integration with exported tcmalloc functions. It took me and others to figure out how to get this done. You might want to stop reading now if you don't build your own MySQL binaries.

When does it make sense to cache ColdFusion code?
Submitted by Webmaster on Sunday March 08, 2009
This is in response to a question asked of me on Twitter (I'm using Twitter a lot recently, but I'd probably suggest folks use emails for questions as Twitter can be hard to catch up). The user asked potential bottlenecks with cfdocument and cfpdf. This brought up a general suggestion I thought I'd share on the blog. When does it make sense to cache ColdFusion code?

Open Source -- Is it Free?
Submitted by Webmaster on Saturday March 07, 2009
"Open source" has come a long way and with the new administration adopting the open source content management system Drupal to power the recovery.gov Web site, open source's visibility will likely get another big boost. Speaking from the standpoint of a developer, the number of tools, utilities and programs available under open source licensing continues to be very exciting. But it is also true that confusions still persist about what it is and, in particular, about its costs. "Open source" and "free" are not synonymous -- though there is a relationship between the two terms.

Submitted by Webmaster on Friday March 06, 2009
"Code Conversations" is a new series of videos intended to film casual conversations with notable Google developers and legends in the technology field. No agenda, no topic... just thoughts. This video is the first episode of this series, in which Chris DiBona, our intrepid open source programs manager talks to Stephanie Liu of the Developer Team about his "sweet goatee" in the Chrome Comic. He also explains why Google open sourced Chrome and Android and why we didn't do it sooner. He also touches on why much of Google's software isn't open sourced.
