The key to Linux's mainstream success

Submitted by Webmaster on Monday March 30, 2009

Linux will remain niche because open-source vendors don't have the inclination to push it that extra mile, to front up for "the hassle-free" experience that users expect in their operating system. Not when they have a devoted, tech-savy user base already to hand.

Qt 4.5 license changing to LGPL

Submitted by Webmaster on Saturday March 28, 2009

We are working on providing Qt 4.5.0 as updates for Fedora 9 and 10. The updates have already been built. They will be tagged into the buildroots for Fedora 9 and 10 shortly after this announcement is sent, in order for KDE 4 packages to get rebuilt against it, as some KDE modules are highly dependent on the Qt version used to build them and check the Qt version at build time.

An Open-Source Presidency

Submitted by Webmaster on Friday March 27, 2009

President Obama has been praised and vilified for exploring the use of open-source technology. Yet touting open-source software use in the public sector is nothing new. The U.S. actually lags behind the governments of the Netherlands, Brazil and others that have effectively mandated open source over proprietary software in civil and federal government. The U.K. recently moved to favor open-source adoption while the European Commission has recommended the adoption of open source across all European Union member countries.

Installing VirtualBox 2 On A Debian Lenny Desktop

Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday March 26, 2009

This tutorial shows how you can install Sun xVM VirtualBox 2 on a Debian Lenny desktop. VirtualBox is available as a package from the official Debian Lenny repository, but it's very old (version 1.6.6), therefore I explain how to install the current version (2.1.4 at the time of this writing).

Gentoo: Tips to upgrade your really old installation

Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday March 26, 2009

This post attempts to help out someone that is trying to bring an unmaintained installation up to date. Under most circumstances it is probably easier to reinstall after a certain point. These instructions have been created by an active contributor to Gentoo, Nick Fortino, to take a 2006.1 installation and update it to a current stable system. (Which I hope is much more extreme than anyone needs).

Firebug bugs vs Firefox bugs

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 25, 2009

I'm having deja vu all over again. Last spring we spent several months to get Firebug 1.2 to work on Firefox 3.0. This included completely re-writing the Firebug console and command line among other issues. At the time I chalked this up to the big jump from FF 2.0 to FF 3.0. Now I can see this was the wrong way to look at it.

Are Linux apps and games worth paying for?

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 25, 2009

The Linux operating system is free; you can download it without paying any licensing fees. You can use it in the home, you can run a business on it, even a data centre. You can embed it within tiny custom hardware. Despite this, Linux hasn't become a household name. Paradoxically, it may be the perceived dearth of commercial applications which is a cause.

Open Source Backers See Downturn Opportunity

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 25, 2009

Most tech suppliers aren't too happy about the state of the economy. Tighter budgets brought on by the crisis generally means less IT spending. Proponents of open software don't dispute the challenge, but they argue the current tough times mean there's more opportunity to pitch the advantages of open solutions.
