Toward an open web standard for 3D graphics
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 24, 2009
For years, developers have tried to create rich 3D experiences on the web. However, the lack of a common way to render 3D graphics in the browser has forced them to use workarounds like special purpose plugins or software rendering frameworks. As a result, web users have generally experienced lower quality graphics compared to what can be found in today's desktop apps.

Skype Gentoo Linux Client plugin (SMS support)
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 24, 2009
I was pretty upset after reading that the last status update on the Skype Linux client was back in January. Since I was using Skype on Windows all week last week, I didn't know how bad it was on Linux until I got back home. What a bummer that all Linux gets is v2.0, while Windows gets v4.0. In particular, I needed the SMS feature. So, now Gentoo has this feature via plugin now too.

Firebug: remove, remove, removeEventListener!
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 24, 2009
Ever couple of months I spend an embarrassingly long time tripping on the same stupid mistake:
win.addEventListener("pageshow", onPageShow, true);
.. 2215 lines all twisted together...
win.removeEventListener("pageshow", onPageShow, false);
The removeEventListener() call fails, silently, so the event handler can be called again.

Virtual machine, real problems
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 24, 2009
Since I bought Yamato I have been trying my best to make use of the AMD-V support in the Opterons, this included continuing the fight with VirtualBox to get it to work properly, with Solaris and Fedora, then trying RedHat's virt-manager and now, after the failure the other day QEmu 0.10 (under Luca's insistence).

Scala In The Enterprise
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday March 23, 2009
You see, I have a small problem - 3 million lines of RPG and COBOL, 5,500 logical and physical files on a few AS400s that are not exactly cheap. Even better through the years, the system has been cloned and forked so several incompatible versions of exist through out the world.

Configuring VirtualBox on a remote server
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday March 23, 2009
At TwoMenDesign we are testing and evaluating the VirtualBox virtual machine from Sun. This VM is the youngest one around but nevertheless has a lot to offer.
Creating a virtual machine on a remote Linux server is really easy. I assume that you've already installed VirtualBox, or if you haven't please look here for a tutorial for your Linux distribution.

Bundling libraries: the curse of the ancients
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday March 23, 2009
I was very upset by one comment from Ardour's lead developer Paul Davis in a recently reported "bug" about the un-bundling of libraries from Ardour in Gentoo. I was, to be honest, angry after reading his comment, and I was tempted to answer badly for a while; but then I decided my health was more important and backed away, thought about it, then answered how I answered (which I hope is diplomatic enough).

Will Microsoft Abandon Windows to Compete with Linux?
Submitted by Webmaster on Friday March 20, 2009
As much as Microsoft loves to grinch about Linux, they've made significant changes over the years to compete with it--and will abandon it altogether to maintain their competitive edge. Windows 7 will be the last Windows product.

XMLUnit for xml assertions
Submitted by Webmaster on Friday March 20, 2009
Thought i'd blog this little snippet. Was struggling with xml comparisons for unit testing, I initially tried XMLUnit but found that it was too sensitive. After a bit of digging in the docs, I found how to configure it to be much more forgiving on element ordering, whitespace etc.

Introducing Redis: a fast key-value database
Submitted by Webmaster on Friday March 20, 2009
Redis is a key-value database. It is similar to memcached but the dataset is not volatile, and values can be strings, exactly like in memcached, but also lists and sets with atomic operations to push/pop elements.
