Getting started with DTracing MySQL

Submitted by Webmaster on Friday March 06, 2009

DTrace is a dynamic tracing facility built into the Solaris and Open Solaris operating systems and can be used by system administrators and developers alike to observe the runtime behavior of user level programs and of the operating system itself. On one hand, DTrace can be used to identify potential bottlenecks in the running processes on a production system and on the other DTrace can help you understand the runtime behavior of an external program such as MySQL better.

The Reality of Using Linux Every Day

Submitted by Webmaster on Friday March 06, 2009

The above probably sounds like I'm talking about Windows, but I'm not. Those are a few of the many complaints I've heard about Linux any time it's brought up.

A couple years ago, I would have been nodding my head right along with whomever was talking--after all, I wouldn't have really suggested that someone with no technical knowledge (and no interest in learning) dump Windows and download a distro.

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 04, 2009

After a long week of chronic procrastination, here is finally my report from the recent SCaLE conference. The 7th Southern California Linux Expo, familiarly known as SCaLE 7x, was held at the Westin Hotel Los Angeles Airport Hotel on February 20th through the 22nd, and Haiku had its booth for the third year in a row.

Much ado about Safari 4

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 04, 2009

WHEN Apple released a beta test version of Safari 4 last week, it claimed it was the world's fastest browser. Some tests have supported that claim; others have not. These speed contests remind me of the gunslingers of the Old West-being the fastest draw was usually an ephemeral state.

Finance for Android App

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 04, 2009

Just over a year ago, during a user experience research trip for Google Finance, we were at the home of a stay-at-home mom / day trader. She was frustrated that there were "personal blackout periods" in the trading day when she was entirely disconnected from the stock market -- for example, while she was ferrying kids around or at lunch with friends. Her situation wasn't unique.

Getting Started with Zend Server CE

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 03, 2009

Every once in a while, I get the urge to clean up my development environment, reinstalling everything from the operating system on down just to experience the good vibes that come with a squeaky-clean (and super-snappy) system. However, this isn't something to be undertaken lightly - it typically takes me an entire weekend to get things set up the way I like them, and I always emerge from the experience bruised and bleary-eyed from squinting at installation documents and configuration variables.

Symfony: Call the expert: Adding subdomain requirements to routing.yml

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 03, 2009

A question came across the mailing list today that provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the flexibility of the symfony 1.2 routing system.

Evert Harmeling posed the following:

How can I point sub1.domain.com/test to a different route than sub2.domain.com/test inside the same application?

This is not supported natively by the symfony core, but the routing system can easily be extended to meet Evert's requirement.

Oodle Resurects Facebook Marketplace

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 03, 2009

As Caroline McCarthy notes, Facebook Marketplace is back and powered by Oodle. It's Craigslist with real faces attached to the postings (which means it will likely not be nearly as fun). Oodle also powers MySpace.
