phpBB: How many forums should I create?
Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday March 19, 2009
I touched briefly on this in the very first blog post here at phpBB.com. If you've just set up phpBB, how many forums should you create?
As I said in that blog post, the key is to start small and increase the number of forums you have over time. There is nothing worse than going to a forum which takes a minute to load, takes twice that long to scroll to the bottom of the page and has dozens upon dozens of inactive forums with either a handful of posts or none at all.

Populating a DataGridView From a Database Query
Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday March 19, 2009
Over the years I have made sporadic attempts the wrap my head around programming using the .Net class library. I have used Delphi for over 10 years so maybe I am biased, but it seems as though many of the things that can be done with a couple of mouse clicks in Delphi require a lot more work to accomplish using .Net.

The Linux Staging Tree, what it is and is not
Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday March 19, 2009
It's been many months since the Linux Kernel developers conference, where the linux-staging tree was discussed and role changed. It turns out that people are still a bit confused as to what the staging tree is for, and how it works.
So here's a short summary, I'm not going into the history or background here, that's a much longer writeup that I'd be glad to do if people are interested.

Does SUSE Linux Server Have a Future?
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 18, 2009
If you look at the enterprise server operating system market, there's Microsoft's Windows server platform, there's the UNIX platform and there's Linux. To characterize it very broadly, UNIX has a large server market share but is in decline, Windows has a similarly large market share and is holding steady, and Linux has a smaller market share that is on the rise.

IBM and Sun: Good for Unix and Linux, Bad for HP?
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday March 18, 2009
IBM is reportedly in talks to acquire Sun for a whopping $6.5 billion. At this early stage, its not known whether this is a fact or just a rumor.
But just for the sake of argument, let's consider what a powerhouse IBM Sun would be. In my opinion, it would be a boon to both the Unix and Linux markets.

SEO for Flash based sites and/or applications has always been a hot topic. Depending on the source you'll very hear different opinions. That's exactly why Belgian based agency Nascom did their own test a few weeks back. They came to the conclusion that Google can index Flash. This is a tutorial on how to get VirtualBox up and running on Fedora 10. Also, this tutorial is for the 32-Bit version of VirtualBox, so you'll have to customize a little more to get the 64-bit version running. Everything in the "code" sections should be copy/pasted/typed into the terminal.

Still avoiding Objective-C? iPhone App Development with Python
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 17, 2009
I've taken a couple of looks at Objective C. Long enough to initially decide that iPhone development was not for me. That accelerometer just seems so neat though so between Unity3D's iPhone SDK and other avoidance strategies I'm back on the iPhone development bandwagon.

Gentoo: MySQL build system
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 17, 2009
I have to introduce the post stating that I'm not a MySQL user; this site and the xine bugzilla both run on PostgreSQL, and similarly PostgreSQL is what holds the symbol collision database on my box. So if I feel critical of MySQL, well, I am. I'm not really much interested in improving it either, but I don't want just to shitspread them, so my assessment will be as objective as I can be.

Installing Debian Web-server with Apache, PHP, and MySQL on virtual machine
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday March 17, 2009
Installing Linux is not a complex task, you only need to follow some instructions and have basic understanding of how computer software and hardware work. Also you should be ready that documentation will be different from what you already might have seen. It means that it may be less colorful, more technical, and have different terminology.
