GSoC project : Internationalization for Haiku
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday April 21, 2009
the idea was born because we were talking about "which os is better" on the ENSSAT mailing list, between linux, mac os X and windows (the kind of endless discussion student have all the day long ;)). I sent a link to Haiku homepage to point the fact that there was other alternatives, and someone replied "hey, it doesn't even speaks french!". This fact is quite annoying for an operating system targeted to regular users, and not powerful computer geeks.

Submitted by Webmaster on Monday April 20, 2009
With Sun setting itself up for sale, a number of companies have started gazing towards its direction. While some of them are fixing their sights on the company itself as a whole, others are locking in on smaller, tastier prey - Sun's customers. Dell is one such predator.

Has Microsoft lost its war on open source?
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday April 20, 2009
Is Microsoft a friend or foe of open source? Going by the company's actions, Microsoft can't seem to decide whether to make love or war. But if it's war, Microsoft appears to lack the legal weaponry to defeat or even disturb its adversaries.

First look at PC-BSD 7.1
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday April 20, 2009
It's fair to say that while I'm a free software guy, I'm not a BSD guy. Like many, I've done the odd install here or there, used a BSD-based appliance for one task or another, but it's never been on my mind when it comes to the desktop.

Application Binary Interface
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday April 20, 2009
Following my earlier post about libtool archives, Jorge asked me how they relate to the numbers that come at the end of shared objects; mostly, they don't, with the exception that the libtool archive keeps a list of all the symlinks with different suffix components for a given library.

Since I recently ordered a HTC G1 smartphone that runs Android, I wanted to be able to code for it as well. But since I'm a bit allergic to Java, I decided to figure out how to use the nice language Scala on it.

The hype around OSGi
Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday April 16, 2009
OSGi makes a nice kernel if you want to build really modular applications, but how many real world systems really need this? I'd dare to say maybe 10% of them and certainly less than 20%.

Migrating databases with DBUnit
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday April 15, 2009
In the last few weeks I had to migrate a MySQL database and it turned out to be more difficult than I thought. In the past I've used the tools that ship with MySQL, such as mysqldump and its various options. For the recent migrations that was surprisingly... impossible.
