Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday January 21, 2009

Net neutrality really is the hot topic at the moment. After the FCC slapped Comcast for slowing down BitTorrent users, Canada is now looking into the network management practices of its ISPs. And rightly so, as a CRTC investigation reveals that most of the ISPs in Canada actively slow down customers using P2P applications.

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday January 21, 2009

The New York Times ran a piece this Sunday featuring Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth. Though a majority of the piece was biographical, and the rest wasn't exactly the picture of accuracy in its portrayal of Ubuntu (or Linux in general), there were a few interesting figures.

Building desktop Linux applications with JavaScript

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday January 20, 2009

During his keynote presentation at OSCON last year, Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth described application extensibility as an important enabler of innovation and user empowerment. Citing the Firefox web browser and its rich ecosystem of add-ons as an example, Shuttleworth suggested that the Linux community could deliver a lot of extra value by making scriptable automation and plugin capabilities available pervasively across the entire desktop stack.

Automating Data Visualization with Ruby and Graphviz

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday January 20, 2009

I often have the need to visualize data from the enterprise resource planning system we use at work. For those not familiar, an ERP is a collection of servers and software that essentially create a common environment for people to monitor and plan a business. One of the downsides I've ran into with our ERP system is that the data within is huge, complex, and not easy to visualize.

Mobile device syncing in Linux made easy

Submitted by Webmaster on Monday January 19, 2009

There's a long history of syncing mobile devices with Linux.

That long history is mostly filled with one device not synchronising, followed by another device not working, followed by another.

The problem is that the protocols and software used by most devices to talk with one another are closely guarded secrets, and anyone attempting to write an open source client needs to decode those protocols bit by bit, and then stay ahead of any changes.

What killed Vista will make Windows 7 fly

Submitted by Webmaster on Monday January 19, 2009

I'm one of those users who has been using Vista with no problems ever since Microsoft gave out RTM copies to beta testers. However, as a writer, I've watched the media completely destroy the public opinion of Vista, leading many to stick with Windows XP or to look for alternatives, even before they had tried Vista.

Troubled Technologies: An 2009 Watch List

Submitted by Webmaster on Sunday January 18, 2009

Well, the new year is upon us. Time to cast off bad habits, internalize new resolutions, and call for the untimely death of a few Internet industries by year's end.

OK... we won't take things that far. But we are ready to declare a few technologies to watch this year, as the VC well dries up, business models continue to fail to work or even materialize, and the recession comes around to cull the tech industry's weakest. It's safe to say, for some, 2009 will not be a good year.

The iPhone Could Be The Ultimate Study Machine

Submitted by Webmaster on Sunday January 18, 2009

We've all heard about the incredible growth of the App Store, which has seen more than 500 million downloads across over 15,000 applications. Much of the innovation (or at least, money) has come from games and other entertaining apps like Smule's Ocarina and Pandora Radio. But the iPhone is also poised to make huge strides in a somewhat less glamorous space: study guides.
