symfony 1.2.4 - Fixing two unfortunate regressions
Submitted by Webmaster on Thursday February 05, 2009
The symfony 1.2.3 release introduced two regressions, and to prove that symfony favors no ORM, both got one :-). Just kidding. I am very sad about this having happened, but thats life, and even more important that we resolve the issue in a timely manner. I am sorry for any inconvenience these regressions might have caused.

MySQL: Replicating Locking Sessions
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday February 04, 2009
We were running Drupal benchmarks to measure the performance of Drupal/Galera cluster and were surprised to find locking sessions (LOCK TABLES...UNLOCK) in the SQL profile. Locking sessions were originally left out of Galera supported feature set, but now we need to re-consider our policy a bit. Apparently, we are going to encounter more applications, which were originally written for MYISAM usage, but were later migrated to INNODB.

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday February 04, 2009
The global credit crisis may have caused the decline in consumer and business spending that is assaulting the giants of high tech. But as the dominant technology companies try to emerge from this slump, they may find themselves blaming people like David Title just as much as they blame Wall Street.

mydumper: A tool to do logical dump of MySQL data for large sites
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday February 03, 2009
Last weekend I ended up working on small pet project - and today I'm kind of releasing it.
So, I had that idea that there's no good tool to do logical dump of MySQL data for large sites - mysqldump doesn't provide too much of I/O pressure, mk-parallel-dump is closer, but it doesn't do consistent snapshots, uses same mysqldump, as well as is written in Perl (haha!), and.. I just wanted something new to hack, as proof of concept.

Another Look at MySQL 5.1`s SQL Diagnostic Tools
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday February 03, 2009
No matter what they say, I don't think it's true. Database 'experts' say that 80-90% of a database's overall performance comes from the SQL code that's running against it. And I just don't buy it. Instead, I think that most of a database's performance comes from optimal design, and after that SQL code comes next. If you properly design your database, then you're way ahead of the game in terms of performance issues. That's when well-written SQL code can glide along your design like butter on a hot skillet.

The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular format to publish formatted text and documents. There are several different versions of it, some qualifying as an Open Standard, some certified by ISO and some encumbered by software patents. You might want to promote the versions that are Open Standards, because Open Standards guarantee interoperability, competition and choice.

Questions and Answers about Practical symfony book
Submitted by Webmaster on Monday February 02, 2009
If you want to learn how to develop web applications with symfony 1.2, this is the best resource you can find as of today. If you only want to leaf through it, you can also read it online for free and even download it as a PDF file (4.7 MB).
Otherwise, if you are serious about web development with symfony, you should buy it. The book is an invaluable resource to learn symfony and it sells at a competitive price, much lower than printing your own book (considering printer cartridges, paper, binding, your own time and the low quality achieved with own printing).
