Input Validation: Using filter_var() Over Regular Expressions
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday February 11, 2009
Just about the biggest time-sink on any project, is the amount of input validation that needs to be done. You _have_ to assume your visitor is a maniac serial killer, out to destroy your application. And you have to prevent it.

Desktop Linux Virtualization Options
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday February 11, 2009
Virtualization was once thought to be something of a fad when it first began appearing on desktop PCs not all that long ago. And while no one ever said it outright, it was clear it was not taken seriously until its obvious cost savings - particularly in hardware costs - became self-evident.
Today, we see successes with virtualization from the server on down to the lowly desktop PC. Despite these successes, the question as to which virtualization or "VM solution," is best suited for the job on the desktop front remains largely unanswered. I certainly find this to be relevant for desktop Linux users who remain stuck with specific legacy Windows applications that really do not play well with WINE.

Advanced MySQL Replication - Improving Performance
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday February 11, 2009
MySQL Replication is some sophisticated and flexible technology. As we discussed in our recent article "Fixing MySQL Replication", it can be made quite reliable and robust if the right tools are used to keep it running smoothly.
But what of sites who are experiencing enormous load on the primary server, which is overloading the slave server. Are there ways to speed up performance, so the slave can keep up? As it turns out there are quite a number of ways to do this. We'll discuss a number of them.

Exception Error Handling Implementation in MySQL/VB.NET Windows Database Applications
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday February 11, 2009
In this article I would like to introduce you to the basics of error handling implementation in MySQL/VB.NET windows database applications. I'll be covering structured exception error handling, which was introduced for the first time in VB.NET 2002. I will also go over the latest technologies of disposing unmanaged recourses in .NET Framework with the Using statement. To write exception errors to a log text file, a generic procedure will be developed while MySQL data is loading, inserting, updating and deleting.

Is OpenSolaris Ready for Admin Desktops?
Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday February 11, 2009
OpenSolaris is essentially GNU-Solaris. When talking about the user experience, one could say that since the GNOME desktop is used, running OpenSolaris is no different from running Linux. For the casual Web, e-mail, and office applications user this may be true. For us network and systems administrators, however, we need to be more careful about jumping ships.

IP PBXes Gaining Unified Communications Capabilities
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday February 10, 2009
Technology exists on two levels: The equipment itself and the overall marketing and public awareness that will determine - as much or even more than the bits and the bytes - whether a particular widget and the overall category in which it exists will succeed or fail.

The Linux Reference Platform VM and VirtualBox
Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday February 10, 2009
Our Release Engineering group provides a VMWare VM image of the Linux Reference Platform, which is the VM upon which all of the official Linux builds happen. This is very handy, as you can trade some download time (it's about 1.2 GB) for the time it would take you to install Linux and setup all the build dependencies.
