915resolution with built-in uvesafb

Submitted by Webmaster on Monday June 01, 2009

The video BIOSes of many (most?) Intel cards only support a very limited number of standard 4:3 resolutions. Widescreen and native LCD video modes are thus not available in (u)vesafb unless one hacks the BIOS using a special utility called 915resolution.

Firebird Python PowerConsole Released for Testing

Submitted by Webmaster on Friday May 29, 2009

Today I released PowerConsole v.0.7 to the public. PowerConsole is an enhanced Python interpreter that can host user defined commands. It uses pyparsing-based grammars for user commands to translate them into python calls, so it has limited support for mixing them with Python code.

ASUS Linux insult will be Intel and Dell`s gain

Submitted by Webmaster on Wednesday May 27, 2009

ASUS has effectively abandoned Linux and stated a power user would use Windows instead. This backflip stands against the history of their successful Eee netbook line. Nevertheless, ASUS' loss will be the gain of more savvy players.

NetBSD-current has recently had a new addition - that of netpgp, a BSD-licensed library that can perform digital signature signing and verification, and also encryption and decryption of files. An email explaining netpgp was sent to the tech-security mailing list, but I thought I'd give a short summary of that email here

The Ubuntu Virtual Machine: For An Internet Safety Layer (Part I)

Submitted by Webmaster on Tuesday May 26, 2009

For a brief description:

I want to install Ubuntu Linux inside of a virtual machine (VM), using VirtualBox from Sun. To do that, I have to download VirtualBox software and an Ubuntu ISO image. Once I install both of those items, I create my virtual machine and associate it with my Ubuntu ISO image. I install Ubuntu on the VM. Last, I tweak the settings for my VM.
