Like any star past its prime, Sun Microsystems is left with two choices: It can burn out, or it can fade away. If the struggling server vendor had signed away its independence to IBM in exchange for the tech giant's offer of $7 billion, the deal would have been a sad end for a Silicon Valley icon once worth more than $200 billion.
