NEC will cut 20,000 jobs

Japanese electronics giant NEC Corp. says it plans to slash at least 20,000 jobs worldwide in an effort to cut 80-billion yen ($895-million U.S.) in costs over the next two years. Toshiba Corp. is in talks to merge part of its chip operations with NEC's semiconductor unit, a source said, as a sharp global slowdown forces Japanese chip makers to cut jobs and try to band together.
